His Sweet Surprise  Music & Lyrics

“Wishing On A Photograph”

And it’s real don’t you know

The love that you can show

In your eyes there’s a fire

A bright flame of desire

Look around what do I see

The whole world’s laughing at me

Because I say that I love you

Even though our summer thing is through

Everybody knows that when you’re having fun

Your eyes they glitter like the morning star

And everybody knows that you must love someone

And everybody loves you that’s the way that you are

It was only for a laugh that I took your photograph

I was lonely for a while ‘til I was captured by your style

And you touch my every sense girl you tear down my defence

But I cannot comprehend how you touch my heart again and again

Everybody knows that when you’re having fun

Your eyes they glitter like the morning star

And everybody knows that you must love someone

And everybody loves you that’s the way that you are

It was only for a laugh that I took your photograph

Now I make silent wish as I send a distant kiss

Everybody knows that when you’re having fun

Your eyes they glitter like the morning star

And everybody knows that you must love someone

And everybody loves you that’s the way that you are

This was the first song I ever wrote on the guitar, primarily because I only knew three and a half chords at the time and couldn’t hold the strings down for long! If I was more knowledgeable, its distinctive A/D6, open chord A/D open chord verse structure and lack of a formal chorus wouldn’t have been attempted. But I love this song and even recorded it as a demo some years later (before entering politics). When I updated it I went for more of a rocky chorus to complement the choral aahs (my OMD influence as I like to say). I always had a Jamaican steel drum effect in mind the riff in the verse, so I was glad that it blended in well. It’s the one song from years back that people say they remember years later, even though it was originally just a boring jangly acoustic. The lyrics are the same as when originally written, except changing the line that now reads “even through our summer thing is through”. The theme is about meeting someone on a holiday and then realising after they have departed that you actually like them more than just a summer fling. The lyrics may be throwaway, but they make perfect sense for what they are about, so I decided not to make them any more ‘mature’.

I love the Extended Dance Mix of this song even more. It’s a short song, so I wanted to make it longer and capture the summer feel. Stephen Brett my producer was able to get the effect I wanted in double quick time and I recommend that anyone who likes this song downloads the Extended Dance Mix. I didn’t put the longer version on because I felt that there were already enough songs over four minutes on the album.

The song and lyrics of “Wishing On A Photograph” were inspired by a photograph I took of a girl in Tralee who I was chatting to when on a visit with a friend. There was nothing romantic going on but I did promise that I would write a song for her. So I used the photograph as the theme for the song. Having sent it to her, I ended up corresponding with most of her class from the convent boarding school they attended in Millstreet. I actually travelled down with my friend to perform the song in a garden fete they were having. I told this the story on TV3’s Morning Show in September 2012 and ended up back in touch with the lady in question, who is now living abroad. It was nice to hear from her after all this time.

First single, released August 2012. Version playing is Extended Dance Mix. See store
