HIS SWEET SURPRISE is Paul Nicholas Gogarty (aka gogo or gogsy), a singer/songwriter from Dublin, Ireland.

A former elected member of the Irish Parliament, he was well known locally for his work as a politician, having served in the Dáil from 2002 to 2011. He is involved in community activism and will be running as a candidate in the local elections in Lucan/Palmerstown in May 2014.

Paul has been writing songs from an early age. He started busking for fun while still at school and ended up doing this for 13 years, starting out on Grafton Street and Merchant’s Arch, before settling outside Grogan’s Pub in the pedestrianised Castle Market area of Dublin. He continued to busk and do the occasional gig while working as a journalist, but stopped doing music when he was elected to national politics in 2002.

He was re-elected in 2007 but failed to be elected in the February 2011 election. He was the first politician to concede defeat by Twitter, with the statement “I concede with good grace”.

Following his involvement in a number of work, charity and TV/media projects during 2011, Paul set his mind towards recording songs for his debut album. The first of these was “Alone On Mars”, a reworked old song in December 2011. This was followed in January 2012 by the brand new track “Know You All My Life”. Over the following 12 months the new album was written and recorded, with debut single “Wishing On A Photograph” being released online on 26 August. This was followed on 1 November by the radio edit of “Dream Within A Dream”.

The third HIS SWEET SURPRISE single “Know You All My Life” was released on 11 January and went as high as No.1 on the 7Digital download chart in Ireland.

The debut album also titled “His Sweet Surprise” was released on 17 February 2013.

The name HIS SWEET SURPRISE was coined by Paul in May 2012. "I wanted something that separated my musical work from people’s perceptions of me as a politician and media figure. A lot of people think that you have to be one thing or the other and there is a feeling out there that any musical output from a former politician is likely to be a load of rubbish.

“The songs I write tend to be melodic and easy on the ear. My hope is that after having a listen to the material on the album, a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised! That's why I decided on HIS SWEET SURPRISE.”
