His Sweet Surprise  Music & Lyrics

“Angel By My Side”

Remember how we met

Almost an accident

I wasn’t looking for a sign

But looking back on how

We came together I

Can’t help but feel

There was some design

And I don’t know what I’d do

If I was here without you

‘Cos you’re the precious Angel by my side

I come in late at night

You’ve fallen fast asleep

You look so peaceful where you lie

You’re beautiful at rest

I watch you as you breath

And I’m so happy that you’re mine

And I don’t know what I’d do

If I was here without you

‘Cos you’re the precious Angel by my side

And I’m so glad that what we share

Is more than most have known

‘Cos I don’t think that Angels

Should be all alone

What we have is spiritual

Although incomprehendable

What we have is deep inside and still

What we have brings us to heights

That I’ve never known before

And I know I never will

Except with you

Your every waking move

The way you laugh and sing

Why I’m the luckiest alive

And I don’t know what I’d do

If I was here without you

‘Cos you’re the precious Angel by my side

And I’m so glad that what we share

Is more than most have known

‘Cos I don’t think that Angels

Should be all alone

Yeah we two are one

As we walk in the winter sun

Through the leaves of fall

In spring with daffodils nearby

With our eternal summer love

Shining by

And I don’t know what I’d do

If I was here without you

I busked for many years with this song from a missing musical (one of the actors from the TV series Ballykissangel had been listening to a few songs I’d sung whilst having a coffee - this one included - and he came over and said to me: “I know what you do. You write musicals.” Someone give me an advance and you never know!).

Back then the song was called “Her Guess” and it was “just her guess that decides if we two are one” in the chorus. But it started out with an a capella intro left out in the recorded version that said “How often we’re removed, from our autumn solitude, to follow spiritless designs. I know the dead can’t dance, but given half a chance, given her guess to live or die. Given her guess to live or die”. I even performed a verse of it this way on the Saturday Night Show with Brendan O’ Connor in April 2011.

But then someone close told me that this lyric didn’t make any sense and although I disagreed in the context of the overall song, I had to agree that it was hard to see what sense it made unless you got the whole song. Which meant it sounded nonsense!

And so the new lyrics to this new revised song “Angel By My Side” were written on a laptop while I was actually recording the vocals.  The last few lines from “yeah we two are one, as we walk in the winter sun…” were on the original “Her Guess” version. As was the middle 8, “what we have is spiritual…” part. I kept these as they fitted into the narrative.

It’s an usual song arrangement because it has a high number of beats per minute even though it comes across as somewhat of a slow song. It sounds much faster on its own on guitar. I didn’t notice this until well into the arrangement (I wanted a mellow feel to convey a sense of joy but still wanted a distinctive beat). Because of this effect the lyrics perhaps subconsciously evolved into a celebration of what you have and how lucky you are to have it.

Originally called “Her Guess”
